The term 'mantel clock' pretty much defines any small clock that fits neatly on a Mantlepiece. This could be a late 17th century clock made by Knibb or Tompion, a small library clock from the 19th century or a French Ormolu Mantel Clock from late 19th century.
In recent years one of the most popular examples is the Four Glass Library clock. These are normally veneered in either rosewood, mahogany, fruitwood or satinwood and feature bevelled glass sides and an inspection window to the top of the case to view the escapement. High quality examples are now increasingly rare and therefore very collectable.
